A community-spirited group of seniors are taking their scooters the extra mile to connect with others.
The Scooter Gang was recently set up to help people in mobility scooters connect, gathering on the third Saturday of each month at the natural bushland setting of Boronia Bushland Reserve.
If the free barbecue isn’t an incentive, maybe the thought of meeting new people and socialising is.
The next meeting is on Saturday October 16 from 11am-1pm, and the gang’s leader Lillian Stranic, 74, says it’s important to enjoy the health benefits of the great outdoors.
Local MP Linus P0wer has signed on as patron.
“Too often seniors feel isolated in their homes and find it hard to get out and make new friends. This was the main motivation behind forming The Scooter Gang,” Ms Stranic said.
She and companion Bill enjoy their scooters for increased mobility, but say there is no need to have a scooter to be a part of the gang.
“It’s just about local seniors getting together in a relaxed gathering. Everyone is welcome,” she said.
Katrina Christie from RESTORE Community Services which manages the program, said she was working together with local politicians and local council to support much-needed programs in the area.
“Outings like this are important for seniors as it can add to their life and lead to improvement in physical, emotional and mental health,” Ms Christie said.
The Scooter Gang has its own Facebook page. Phone Lillian Stranic on 0400 779 088. Multicultural and Indigenous seniors are encouraged to attend.
