A Slacks Creek artist and insect taxidermist who creates art from real insects and arachnids will share his skills at a workshop this week.
Tim Lee has built a niche following of 10,000 on his Facebook page Captured Spider Web Creations where he shows how he blends his fascination with beetles and bugs with taxidermy and found objects to create unusual art pieces.
He preserves insects, including praying mantis, moths and wasps, extending their limbs and wings to show them in detail.
One of his most requested pieces is a scorpion posed atop a grenade, holding the pin in its claw.
Another unusual work features a shiny green giant jewel beetle with its wings extended and clock mechanisms carefully installed within its body, giving it the appearance of a hybrid mechanical insect.
Mr Lee said he had received many requests to host a workshop and this would be his first.
“The workshop will be like a sip and pin sort of an affair, so everyone will get a glass of bubbly on arrival,” he said.
Mr Lee will show people how to relax, position and pin both a scorpion and a tarantula.
“I want to show people how to bring them back to life. When things look as though they’re alive, I find they get more respect for what they are, as opposed to a scientific study in a frame on a wall,” he said.
The workshop is limited to 20 seats, with only a handful remaining.
Participants receive a real tarantula and scorpion, as well as a toolkit.
The workshop costs $165 and will run for three hours from 1pm on Saturday 15 August at the Logan Art Gallery.
