THIS is a poem I wrote at the time of Slim Dusty’s passing in 2003. Dedicated to Australians, one and all.
Barry Thornton, Gordon Parsons, mates who’d gone before
were there to welcome Slim, as he passed the golden door
alas he had no hat, The Don said ” wear my baggy green”
then a loud “Surprise” was heard , from behind a secret screen
Mum Shirl and Dorothy Mackellar, they were in the throng
The gold guitar began to play, the heavens rang with song
but when they reached the part of the pub that had no beers
The King’s eyes drifted downwards and he saw our many tears
The man who walked the country mile was troubled at this site
Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson, quickly put him right
They said “You taught them well, no sweat they’ll be okay
following your example, your life has shown the way
pride in one another and deeds that show they care
will help advance Australia , green and gold AND fair'”
So let’s join Dunc and cheer Australia with a toast tonight
and smile as we recall Slim’s words “Say G’day, and she’ll be right”.
Paul Wincen,
Woodridge.
