Detectives investigating the alleged torture and physical abuse of a girl, 4, in Logan say it is one of the worst cases they have seen.
A woman, 32, has been arrested and charged.
Police launched a high-risk missing person investigation they receive a tip-off about a young girl suffering “significant injuries”, police said in a statement on Friday.
“It will be alleged the investigation uncovered disturbing evidence of sustained and severe physical abuse inflicted upon the child over an extended period,” the statement read.
On 9 January, the four-year-old girl was found by police and taken to Logan Hospital.
Disfigurement, burns, fractures and bruising were among her “extensive” injuries, according to police.
“The alleged physical abuse this little girl endured is amongst the worst I have seen in my career,” detective acting inspector Kent Ellis said.
“Her injuries are horrific and highlight the unimaginable suffering she has experienced.”
Police allege the woman who was charged – with offences including torture and grevious bodily harm – tried to conceal the girl and her injuries by moving her to various addresses.
The 32-year-old was arrested on 24 January and charged with almost 30 offences.
Her charges include six counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, eighteen counts of supplying dangerous drugs and one count each of torture, grievous bodily harm – all domestic violence related.
She was also charged with possessing utensils or pipes that have been used, and possessing property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence.
She was denied police bail and remains in police custody.
She is due to appear at Beenleigh Magistrates Court on 19 March.
Mr Ellis commended the dedication of the investigating officers, whose persistence he said was instrumental in rescuing the child and ensuring her safety.
“This investigation underscores the tireless efforts of CPIU investigators, who not only conduct their duties with exceptional professionalism but with extraordinary care for the vulnerable victims they serve,” he said.
“The initial response of general duties officers, coupled with the comprehensive investigation by CPIU detectives, saved this child’s life.
“This case highlights the importance of community vigilance.
“If members of the public are aware of or suspect child abuse, they are encouraged to report it to police.”
