Logan’s Mary Hellesoe crowned South East Queensland Bus Driver of the Year

A Logan bus driver known for her warmth and community spirit has been recognised among the state’s best, after taking out a top honour at the 2025 Queensland Bus Driver of the Year Awards.

Mary Hellesoe, who drives for Clarks Logan City Bus Service, was named South East Queensland Bus Driver of the Year following a statewide public vote.

More than 7000 Queenslanders cast ballots, with winners selected from more than 1300 nominations.

The awards, presented by the Queensland Bus Industry Council, highlight drivers who go beyond simply driving, recognising those who build connections and contribute to their communities.

For many in Logan, Ms Hellesoe is a familiar and trusted presence on their daily commute. Passengers describe her as approachable and attentive; someone who brings consistency and care to everyday journeys.

Speaking after receiving the award, Ms Hellesoe thanked the community that supported her.

“It feels great and I am honoured,” she said.

“Thank you to the Logan community, everybody, thank you for voting for me and for your love and continuous support.

“You don’t have to share blood to be family and being a bus driver within the Logan community, you connect with people.”

Acting Head of Translink Dean Helm said the awards reflected the essential role drivers played across the state.

“These awards recognise the vital role bus drivers play in keeping Queensland moving and supporting their communities every day,” Mr Helm said.

“To be recognised from more than 1300 nominations across all award categories is a remarkable achievement.”

Ms Hellesoe also used the moment to encourage others to consider the profession.

“For anyone looking to be a bus driver, what are you waiting for?” she said. “Take a leap, you’ve got nothing to lose.”

Each category winner received a trophy and $1000 prize.
