Olympics a step away

Logan authorities are becoming quietly excited about Southeast Queensland’s Olympic bid.

The International Olympic Committee is next week expected to recommend the Brisbane proposal to host the 2032 Olympics – a serious step towards the event becoming reality.

“While recognising that the ultimate decision on the host city still rests with the future IOC Members Session, this is an exciting and highly positive step in the process,” Member for Forde Bert van Manen said.

“As Australia continues to recover from the effects of Covid, the Olympics provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure both economic benefits and health and well-being benefits to the entire community.”

The journey to this point has taken six years, propelled forward by the Southeast Queensland Council of Mayors.

“Six years ago, the Council of Mayors (SEQ) started looking at a regional Olympic and Paralympic Games to bring forward the infrastructure our communities need and to position the region as a global destination for tourism, trade and investment,” Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said.

“Our commitment over the past six years has never waivered and we are honoured the IOC Executive Board has recommended our proposal be put to IOC members to decide if we should host the Games of the 35th Olympiad.

“If we are successful, it will deliver a decade of regional benefits for our communities, including a significant employment boost, along with billions of dollars in tourism and trade opportunities.”

It would be expected that Logan would host at least one of the events, and would benefit from associated infrastructure.
