The extravagant Versace-style house at 19 Hatia Place, Kuraby – so the story goes – was built by a European builder for a Hong Kong man whose son was dating a girl from Sydney.
“In true Versace-style, many (rooms) feature splashes of gold, crystal chandeliers, elaborate artworks and Roman-style columns to give it a grand look,” agent Eddie Singh says.
Problem was, by the time construction was done, the son had followed his girlfriend to Sydney, and a new fully-furnished home remained in Kuraby.
But the local tale doesn’t end there.
At the ensuing auction, a man whose wife was giving birth in a nearby hospital had decided to visit a friend in Kuraby.
With time on his hands, he’d lost his way and stumbled upon the auction, liked what he saw, registered for the auction, and put in a call to his accountant.
He returned to the hospital having negotiated a post-auction deal. “Surprise!”
It’s Kuraby’s own Versace pad and has all the opulence to match – marble, Roman columns, parquet floors, 5.4m ceilings in the foyer and crystal chandeliers.
The ornate wrought-iron and art-designed windows are a bonus.
It’s not a huge block, on 601 square metres, but every square metre seems to have been thought through, including two tates which lead to a garage on each side of the house.
There is a curved staircase, four bedrooms each with timber doors, two ensuites, an upstairs sitting area, private balcony at the back and Juliet balconies at the front, walk-in robes and a large main bathroom.
Downstairs, there is a formal lounge and reception room, a dedicated dining room, living area, sunroom and rumpus.
The kitchen has solid granite benches and Ariston appliances.
There’s a rainwater tank outside, solar panels, a garden shed, and landscaping that requires little maintenance.
