Truck drivers failing to wear seat belts

A police blitz this week has found an extraordinary number of truck drivers failing to wear seat belts while hurtling down the highway near Springwood and Loganholme.

The blitz, along the Pacific Motorway between Springwood and Loganholme, was initiated in an attempt to keep one of the busiest roads in Queensland safe for the upcoming school holidays.

But speeding wasn’t the only issue. A total of 35 infringement notices were issued to motorists, including 22 failure to wear seat belts.

Police said a large proportion of those were issued to truck drivers.

“Operation Chevron Jasper was run on Wednesday with officers from both units (Springwood Police and Logan District Road Policing Unit) frustrated by results,” a police statement said.

Senior Constable Chris Jones from Springwood Police, responsible for coordinating the operation, said the results were very concerning.

“Finding 22 drivers in a period of three hours without a seat belt travelling down the motorway at around 100km/h is very disturbing,” Senior Constable Jones said.

“If you are not wearing a seat belt at that speed and are involved in a crash, you don’t have a chance.”

Two drivers were also charged with unlicensed driving.

With the school holidays almost upon us, Springwood Police will continue to focus on all major roads throughout their division and urge all motorists to obey all of the road rules to keep themselves and all of those motorists around them safe.
