Church-led depression program hope and healing

Two years ago Beenleigh local Corey Reynolds was going through a breakup and had a strained relationship with his daughter, who lived in New Zealand with his grandchildren.

Mr Reynolds said he lacked confidence and was highly stressed, and felt his relationship with his children was suffering as a result.

“I was struggling to communicate… and I’ve got a bit of a colourful past,” he said.

“I had an attitude of ‘if you don’t talk about it, it doesn’t hurt you’ – which is totally wrong.”

But then he stumbled upon a program run by the Seventh-Day Adventist Church at Park Ridge.

“I did the program and it gave me the tools to deal with some of these things,” he said.

“It came at the right time in my life.

“I received a pamphlet in the mail that I normally would have just thrown away, but I read it and thought it might be interesting.”

The program was created by an American physician, Niel Nedley, from the Weimar Center of Health and Education.

Since he left New Zealand 17 years ago, Mr Reynolds had only seen his daughter a handful of times.

He said he felt guilty and thought he didn’t deserve to have good things.

“But I reached out to my daughter in New Zealand and apologised to her for my past, and for running away from every problem, and it was a real blessing.”

“She opened up as well – it was really good.”

He said the program not only helped him reunite with his daughter, but also to improve his relationship with his other children.

The program is free – Mr Reynolds said he only needed to purchase a textbook.

“Now that I’ve finished the recovery program, I’ve started doing a bible study with one of the facilitators,” he said.
