The change in weather means many things – the start of footy season, doonas on the bed – but also the flu season. I don’t know about you, but it’s been a lot chillier in the mornings this past few weeks.
So, I am proud to say that I am booked into have my annual flu vaccination next week, and I would encourage you to get yours. In the past, we have all been heavily focussed on ensuring we are vaccinated against the Corona Virus, but the flu influenza is also equally and potentially just as serious.
A flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over. And it’s also recommended that groups of high-risk individuals get vaccinated, as they could also be eligible for a free vaccination.
These high-risk groups include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over, Children aged 6 months to under 5 years, People aged 6 months and over who have medical conditions, pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy, and people who are over the age of 65 years.
Vaccinating this month provides protection before the peak. Whilst protection is generally expected to last the flu season, Queensland Health have this year advised that the best protection against influenza does occur within the first 3 to 4 months following your flu vaccination being administered.
Queensland Health have also said that vaccinations are not immediately effective, and it generally does takes 10-14 days to be fully protected. You can find out more general information on Flu Vaccinations by visiting your doctor, or by jumping online and visiting the Queensland Health Website.
