Logan residents are expected to save thousands of dollars now that the 50c public transport trial has started.
As of today, Monday 5 August, a flat 50c fare will be in place for all Translink public transport services statewide for six months.
Travel will be 50 cents no matter how far you travel or the mode – buses, trains, ferries and trams – including transfers between services.
The Queensland government claims a single bus takes 50 cars off the road and a train takes 600 cars off the road.
Logan City’s bus operator says over 100,000 commuters will save money each week with the cheaper fares.
A spokesperson from Clarks Logan City Bus Service said the company was supportive of the six-month trial.
“We see this as an opportunity not only to assist with the cost-of-living crisis but as a step towards addressing the traffic congestion experienced daily throughout Logan City,” finance and performance manager Kaylee Clark said.
“The key benefits are the savings that can be achieved for the 106,000 weekly commuters that already travel across the Logan bus network.”
Local Member for Woodridge, the Deputy Premier and Treasurer Cameron Dick said residents were “feeling the pinch”.
“I see that every day in my electorate and across the entire state,” he said.
“By making public transport fares are almost free, families will be able to pay their bills, put food on the table and provide for their families. “
Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Bart Mellish said the trial was a “fantastic cost-of-living initiative”.
“We want to make sure it’s a positive experience for both new and existing public transport users,” he said.
“It might be a little busier than usual, so remember – be patient, be cool, be safe, and make use of the tips that Transklink have put together to make your journey more comfortable.
“I encourage everyone to jump on board public transport and make the most of these cheap fares to visit some of the great places not only in South East Queensland, but also on our regional bus networks.”
The director general of the Department of Transport and Main Roads Director General, Sally Stannard, said the 50c fares were the cheapest in Queensland’s modern history.
“We know people are excited for the 50 cent fares trial but we also want to ensure a positive experience for both new and existing public transport users, so it’s important to plan your journey in advance and have your preferred payment method ready,” she said.
“It’s important to remember this is a trial and Translink will monitor all aspects of it closely to inform future decisions around services and fares.”
