2022 major flood claim inquiry

One of the critical roles I have as an elected member of Federal Parliament, is the in-depth review of issues arising in specific matters of policy or legislation through inquiries held by Parliamentary Committees.

The House Standing Committee on Economics, of which I am a member, is currently undertaking public hearings for its inquiry into insurers’ responses to 2022 major floods claims.

This is an issue which I know will resonate strongly with residents, as the inquiry has included the response of insurers through the south-east Queensland floods in February and March of 2022 – which affected so many across Logan, two years ago.

In particular, this includes investigating the experiences of policyholders, before, during and after the floods, and the response of insurers throughout this period.

Over the last two weeks, we have begun hearing from stakeholders within the insurance industry, from across the nation.

By asking detailed questions during these hearings, we are seeking to find the best way forward for policyholders, in order to improve the insurance claims process you may have had during the 2022 floods and those of similar events, elsewhere in Australia.

It is my hope that at the end of this process, we can put forth recommendations to the parliament that will assist in providing better support for policyholders, clearer regulations for insurers and improved preparedness for future events.

However, to do so, your assistance and support in this process would be greatly welcomed.

Through this inquiry, the committee is seeking to hear what your experiences may have been, if you were a policyholder who made a claim, following the floods.

There are a number of avenues which have been made available to members of the public impacted by the 2022 floods, in order to share your experience.

A link to the committee’s online survey can found on the inquiry’s website, by visiting https://www.aph.gov.au/floodinsurance

The committee is also still accepting public submissions for the inquiry.

If you would prefer to submit a more detailed response, by way of a submission to the committee, you can do so by visiting. https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/OnlineSubmission
