Young artist gets industry boost

Local Park Ridge artist, Emma-Lee Boniface, has received a $7000 cash scholarship and private mentorship session with Queensland artist Dr Kellie O’Dempsey, for their visual artwork.

Emma-Lee’s artwork, which explored their cultural background, was chosen from the eight other finalists, also vying for the scholarship.

Other applicants for the local council scholarship included a refugee from Suria, an immigrant from Afghanistan, a fashion designer born in New Zealand, and another local living with Autism.

The scholarship was established last year to honour former council employee Robyn Daw, who passed away in 2022.

Emma-Lee plans to use the winnings to develop large-scale works in a studio space.

Finalists Bea Harrison, of Marsden, and Ayla Sayemuddahr, of Woodridge, were commended for their meaningful and thoughtful artworks, which explored the Syrian revolution, the Treaty of Waitangi, and related cultural and social themes.

An exhibition, displaying the works of all eight finalists, will run at Logan Art Gallery until Saturday, 12 July.
