The Logan Beaudesert region’s unemployment rate of 5.1 percent is higher than the 4 percent Queensland state average, according to a state government report released in February this year.
In December 2024, youth unemployment, 12.5 percent, in the region was the highest in Queensland.
Not-for-profit groups, Workways Australia, Reclink Australia, 5Fold, and the Buzz are trying to tackle these figures by connecting job seekers to employers.
A job expo jointly run by the five organisations was held on 3 May in Yarrabilba and featured employers from sectors including healthcare, retail, and manufacturing.
Kylie Baudino from Workways Australia said in a media release that the Expo was a success for business and the region’s community.
“Our participants were successful in gaining several job interviews through newly formed employer connections. This reiterates the value of not-for-profits offering a platform that directly assists community identity and growth,” said Mr Baudino.
Many factors, like limited job opportunities locally and access to transport, contribute to high unemployment rates.
Workways is involved in lobbying efforts to increase access to public transport services in Yarrabilba and Jimboomba, and publicly asked State MP Linus Power and Minister for Transport Brent Mickelberg for assistance.
Rebecca Green from Reclink Australia said that the Jobs Expo showcased the benefits of collaboration.
“The success of the Expo is a testament to the power of collaboration within our community,” Ms Green said.
Beyond advertising current job vacancies, the Expo held workshops, interview coaching sessions, and resume reviews to equip job seekers with practical employment skills.
Information about community support services was also available.
