There is plenty of talk within the news industry at present about the resurgence of newspapers.
Advertising is again prevalent, and readers are again embracing their local publication.
The question is “why”?
There are a couple of reasons.
First, social media has become a cesspit for trolls. And the internet has become a victim of its own success – difficult to navigate, even more cumbersome to find a snapshot of community news.
Digital communication will find ways to strengthen its presence and there are some very productive and caring people within the community who are moderating valuable groups for their suburbs.
Newspapers are a professional way of curating content which taps into the grassroots of the community, which deliver a snapshot of important issues, and which are not afraid of asking tough questions.
Whether in hard copy or digital form, newspapers are a trusted way of connecting with the local neighbourhood.
To continue answering the question of “why?”, the resurgence is in large part due to the commitment from independents to cut costs and to find affordable ways for businesses to connect with their local community.
Unlike corporate giants, there are no layers of management, overheads are kept to a minimum, and most of us live in the area we work which means we are hellbent on contributing to a vibrant local economy.
If there’s a one-line answer to the question, it’s because we care about where we live.
