Why are we so far behind?

As Logan is on the brink of yet another lockdown, a disturbing statistic shows that our vaccination levels are below the rest of the state.

Not by a little bit that we can catch up overnight. We’re sitting on 33%. That’s 20% behind state average when it comes to those who’ve been for their first jab.

Logan people, including this newspaper, often talk about us being a place where we’ve got each others’ backs, a place where people care for each other and would bend over backwards to help someone who’s disadvantaged, in need of a helping hand, or even a roof over their head.

We’re proud of it. We crow about it. We live and breathe by it when talking up our fine city as a place where people want to live.

This statistic is contrary to the narrative we’ve been sharing with others.

It is a selfish statistic which shows clearly that not enough people have thought about others, and the harm they could do to a community if they contract Covid-19, and consequently pass it on to family, friends and colleagues.

It is an embarrassingly apathetic look at the responsibility shown by a population that seems to think it is not our duty to do our bit for humanity.

Logan Entertainment Centre is opening up for walk-ins. We should be seeing queues along Wembley Road as the Delta strain of this menace laps agonisingly close to our front doors.

There is not time to wait. This is urgent, and everyone should be doing all they can to pat each other on the back, and to congratulate those who are doing the right thing.

Our community needs everyone to vaccinate. Now.
