Has anyone done a good job on your car lately? Anyone in the automotive industry helped you out?
Know someone who simply offers old fashioned good service? Or someone who’s innovating to offer a modern experience?
The Logan Business Distinction Awards organisers want to know of all the hidden businesses throughout the City of Logan who are doing great work.
Automasters marketing manager Carl Meyer says it’s been an unusual year for the entire automotive industry.
A shortage of new cars due to global supply chain issues has meant an increase in the price of used cars, which is something all dealers have had to adapt.
Due to the diagnostics of modern cars, every new car means an updated set of training for motor mechanics, he said.
“One of the challenges for us has been the increase of petrol prices,” he said.
“There has been an immediate drop off in preventative maintenance work on cars. Only about 10% of people are servicing their cars properly.
“Unfortunately, some people think the time to act is when the light comes up on the dash, signaling a mechanical problem. That’s not ideal.”
Mechanics and new car servicing agents are on average seeing people 2-3 times before they stop servicing their cars as per the log book – something which is potentially dangerous for road safety.
The other key shift in the automotive industry has been the shift to electric vehicles.
All dealers have said in recent weeks and months that they are seeing increased interest in electric and hybrid cars, driven primarily by petrol price hikes.
“We’re not seeing a rapid rise in the number of electric cars on the road yet,” Mr Meyer said.
“But it’s definitely on our radar. And that brings with it a whole new set of safety requirements. The voltage in these cars is so powerful, and just because the power is off, the battery is not necessarily off.
“We’re training our mechanics all the time. Each time there’s a new model, it requires updated skills. That’s all part of it, and something we all have to do.”
It’s easy to nominate someone from the automotive industry who’s done a good job for you. If you do, they’ll be asked to be part of the awards.
