Whiskey legion double duty

Perpetrators of domestic violence will be a target of Logan’s second Operation Whiskey Legion deployment.

The operation will see specialist police from the Highway Patrol, Crime and Intelligence Command, Rail Squad, Dog Squad, and Crime Prevention join forces with local police to target high-risk crime in the area.

Logan was the birthplace of the operation, which was later rolled out across eight other locations.

During Logan’s first rollout, 289 people were arrested with more than 600 charges.

In that week, an average of 75 extra police were deployed in the city every day.

Like the first deployment, additional officers are being rolled out to patrol crime hotspots across Logan.

Acting chief superintendent Mark Thompson said hotspots included shopping centres, public transport networks and roads.

“Every member of our Logan community deserves to feel safe,” he said.

“Starting today, we’re doubling that effort and we’re actually going to be delivering an extra 154 police officers into the district over the next nine days.”

Mr Thompson said victim and community engagement was also part of the operation, and in April included more than 800 contacts.

He said domestic and family violence would be targeted.

“Safety is not only about being safe out in the community, it’s also safety within your own home,” he said.

“Starting today, the first thing we’re actually doing is focusing on domestic violence in the home.

“Police will be out there visiting [victims] to support them in their position, but also tracking down respondents that are involved in the perpetration of domestic violence.”

Deputy Commissioner Cheryl Scanlon said Operation Whiskey Legion had seen 2072 adults arrested on almost 5000 charges statewide in less than four months.

Almost 500 juveniles have been arrested on 3091 charges.

“I want to acknowledge the staff at Logan – they were the inaugural group with Ipswich who helped get this operation underway,” she said.

“They are the first district to have a second deployment.”
