As an important follow-on to your articles on “Multi -billion-dollar rail journey” and “Rail project will impact all residents” (MyCity Logan September 14-20), I would like to add:
Nearly a decade ago I, together with others, were working with the Hon. Shannon Fentiman MP pushing for the erection of a pedestrian lift over the railway lines at the Bethania Railway Station.
Just prior to the state election, I believe money was made available for this service to Queensland Rail but before or after the change of governments the pedestrian lift never came to fruition.
Now , after two more state elections this appears to have died a natural or unnatural death.
Logan, particularly the Waterford electorate has many, not just a few, residential parks, retirement parks, nursing homes plus many other seniors living in their own homes and , it appears , that the duly elected personnel and their bureaucrats ( irrespective of their political party) have forgotten about the elderly, or should I call it “past tense personnel” as it is apparent to our politicians that we are not worthwhile looking after due to our age and/or disabilities.
Very few (the younger generations) realise that they will hopefully age just like us.
The Australian population is aging at an extremely fast pace so improved transport changes are imperative whether these changes are for the Olympics or for improvements in services for the elderly and incapacitated.
An over rail lift at the Bethania Rail Station is an immediate requirement and should not form part of a 20-year plan.
I would prefer to see our state government be pro-active and avoid turning deaf ears and/or turning blind eyes to immediate improvements in our rail system.
I believe Bette Midler once said:Â “When it is three o’clock in New York it’s 1938 in London.”
I hope this doesn’t apply to Bethania timetable!
