Waterford West under siege again

The people of Waterford West, probably worst hit by the 2017 floods, are bracing for an even worse battering.

Flood levels as of Monday morning were expected to hit 11.2m today (Tuesday), almost a metre above the levels of five years ago.

Similarly, Maclean Bridge was expected to peak at 21.06m Monday, just above 2017 levels.

People in both areas were being asked to act and plan accordingly.

“The Logan River at Waterford is currently at 9.8m and rising, with major flooding,” an alert said Monday morning.

“The Logan River at Parklands is currently at 6.04m and steady, with major flooding. The Logan River at Parklands is likely to exceed 6.3m late Monday morning and continue rising into Tuesday as flood waters continue to arrive from upstream.”

The Albert River at Beenleigh was also rising and was already considerably higher than the 6.2m recorded in 2013, expected to reach 7.5m by Monday evening. In comparison, it reached 8m in 2017.

Eagleby was heavily impacted.

Logan police said they had responded to a number of calls for assistance relating to vehicles travelling through floodwater and becoming stuck resulting in a rescue.

“This behaviour puts not only your life in danger but the lives of your rescuers,” they said in a statement.

“Motorists are reminded if you are disobeying road closed signs you will be fined with disobeying road access sign, road closed due to flooding which is $165 and three demerit points. Alternatively you can be fined for careless driving which is $551 and 3 demerit points.”
