They’re some of our unsung heroes and go above and beyond as grandparents, parents and community leaders.
The elders in our diverse communities in the City of Logan are often asked to look after the grandkids, provide housing or financial support to their families, or just have a chat over a cup of tea.
While they appear to be resilient and “always there”, it is important that we acknowledge their incredible contribution to society.
Council supports this with a range of programs, and the popular Logan Loves Seniors Day.
While pandemic impacts led to the cancellation of the event last year, I am looking forward to its return on Friday, October 1.
This year’s event will be in a new location – the Logan West Community Centre on Wineglass Drive in Hillcrest.
Our seniors give so much to our city and this event is an excellent way to help them stay informed on matters that interest them.
It could be information on retirement, travel, financial assistance or financial planning and investment.
Some may prefer to participate in gardening and craft workshops, cooking demonstrations, woodworking or exercise.
The event will coincide with Queensland Seniors’ Month – starting on the United Nations International Day of Older Persons and ending on National Grandparents Day, on October 31.
These initiatives help to improve community attitudes towards older people and ageing.
We all have a role to play in encouraging community participation and activity with elders, including those from our Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Whether it’s attending a cooking class, a morning tea or concert, sharing a meal, or having a chat with a neighbour over the fence, connecting with our seniors is an invaluable experience.
Another initiative that Council supports is the Tech Savvy Seniors Queensland Program.
It helps to develop the skills and confidence with technology for socialising, accessing important services or conducting personal business.
Staying connected whether its via technology, or an old fashioned face-to-face cuppa with our learned seniors can make a big difference to their wellbeing – and yours.
A little bit of wisdom may rub off along the way.
