Underwood Scout Den nominated for volunteer award

Underwood Scout Den has been named a finalist in the City of Logan People’s
Excellence Awards for their “outstanding voluntary service” in the Logan community.

Held by Logan City Council, the awards shine a spotlight on a range of achievements and recognise local individuals, groups, clubs, and organisations whose contributions have shaped Logan’s identity, progress, and community spirit.

Underwood Scout Den received a nomination for a Volunteer Award, which celebrates outstanding voluntary service in the Logan community.

Underwood Scout Den Group Leader, Carla Pollard – otherwise known as Magpie – said they are up against some tough competition.

“We have 82 active members at our Underwood den and it’s really because of all leaders, kids, parents, helpers and supporters that show up for us, that we have earnt this nomination,” she said.

“It would be great to win, but we are up against some tough competition, and everyone is worthy of this recognition.”

Ms Pollard said as well as supporting community services and hosting fundraising events for different charities, Underwood scout members also fundraise for the den itself.

“Our community services include Clean Up Australia Day and Messengers of Peace and last year we raised toys and food for a Christmas charity appeal, and we have plans for an event in an aged care facility,” she said.

“We also fundraise for the den to provide experiences and pathways for our youth members, because we don’t have any other funding.”

“We do the best we can with what little resources we have and rely on begging and borrowing or applying for government grants.”

Some of the den’s own fundraising efforts include BBQs, family fundraising days with bake sales, Christmas photos with Santa and a paper plane throwing competition.

Despite the financial struggles, Ms Pollard said the den started a new program this year to further lower costs for scout families.

“This year we started a program to help scout families with the financial side of things, so the kids can attend our Scout National Camps and other outings too much of the costs,” she said.

“We did a lot of fundraising to lower the costs of the four-day camp, because it can get upwards of $600 with uniforms, bags, pots and pans and accessories.”

“We are also one of the lower cost dens in the area at just $130 a term – we try to keep economics out of it and make it affordable for everyone.”

Winners of the City of Logan People’s Excellence Awards will be announced at an invitation-only ceremony on Saturday, 21 March.

Mayor Jon Raven said the “day is about the people who give back and help make Logan a great place to live.”

“They show what Logan can do when we back each other and have a go. That spirit is what makes our city so amazing,” he said.
