Two decades of dance dynamo

For two vibrant decades, Logan City Square Dancers have been igniting the community with their spirited moves.

It’s a friendly group, comprising of experts and newbies that come together to dance, socialise and have some fun.

They run weekly events and are looking for more locals to join and learn.

But there’s something the group’s secretary, Jane Rayner, wants people to know:

“We’re not like the old hillbilly movies from the 50s that you see on TV, where they dance amongst hay bales in a barn. It’s not like that anymore – we have progressed,” Ms Rayner said.

“We dance to popular songs, classical music and jazz – anything you can dance to.”

Ms Rayner said square dancing was for everyone, of all skills and age groups.

“Square dancing is walking in time to music – there’s no fancy footwork to learn,” she said.

“And it’s a worldwide activity, so you can square dance just about anywhere in the world.”

Logan City Square Dancers are starting a new social, introductory class starting on Wednesday 4 October.

Like all their sessions, the weekly class will be held at the Logan City Square Dance Centre in Crestmead, which the dancers built themselves in 2004.

“It took us 10 years to raise the funds to build the hall,” Ms Rayner said.

“We began building the hall in 2000 with the help of volunteers… and we officially opened the hall on 14 February 2004.”

The hall, she said, is often hired out to other clubs and groups.
