Now, a new wave of young girls is stepping onto the field, eager to make lifelong friendships and chase their own rugby league dreams.
This year, Jimboomba Thunder Junior Rugby League aims to field three girls’ teams in the Under 13, Under 15, and Under 17 divisions, providing an exciting chance for future stars to shine.
Jimboomba Thunder secretary Nadine Mills believes rugby league is a great sport for girls to make new friends and build their confidence.
“Our under 13’s team last year were all from different schools and outside of training, they would all spend time together,” she said.
“They became a tight group of teammates which showed on the field.”
The club recently hosted a number of come and try days, with a strong turnout of girls of all ages eager to get involved.
The players went through a series of drills, focusing on skills like ball handling, passing, and tackling.
“It was fantastic to see so many girls giving it a go,” Mrs Mills.
“They were all engaged and enthusiastic, and it’s clear there’s a real passion for the sport growing in our community.”
Jimboomba Thunder is also focused on creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where players of all levels can thrive.
Whether they’re new to the sport or are looking to transition from touch football, the club offers a space where every player has an opportunity to grow and develop their potential.
“Rugby league is a sport where everyone has a role to play,” Mrs Mills said.
“It’s not just about scoring tries, it’s about contributing to the team and being a part of something that feels like family.”
The club is now gearing up for its regular training sessions, which are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6pm to 7pm.
The club will also hold its official sign-on day on 1 February.
“We’re really excited to see some new faces down at the club and I encourage all girls just to come down and give it a go,” Mrs Mills said.
“We really want to showcase the talent that our area has to offer.”
