Tucked away amid acreage on Rochedale Road, an unassuming shed hides one of Logan’s most generous dance studios, complete with mirrors, lighting, surround sound and air-conditioning.
Rob’s Dance owner Robert Hilan has been organising charity dances for people since 2018 out of the Rochedale shed, with more than $15,000 raised for various charities around Australia.
Mr Hilan said the idea grew from years of social dancing and an unofficial habit of helping others on the dancefloor.
“I was dancing socially for many year – modern jive dancing and Latin dancing – and I was helping people unofficially I was there,” Mr Hilan said.
“I thought it’d be good to have a space for routine practices and performances and to continue to help people, for example wedding couples that need lessons.
“So I thought, why not sort of build a little studio here at Rochedale?”
Mr Hilan began converting the shed in 2010, gradually upgrading it from a small dance floor into a fully fitted studio with mirrors, lighting, ballet bars, surround sound and air conditioning.
The monthly charity socials typically attract 15-20 people and raise about $300.
The record donation raised was $2160, raised for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
Mr Hilan said the events gave people a chance to connect while supporting a good cause.
“I like people meeting other dancers from different backgrounds and schools,” he said.
“It’s a way to keep fit close to home, and have people try out their dancing skills while helping to raise money for a good cause.”
Rob’s Dance also offers private lessons for wedding couples and studio hire for the local community.
The next charity social will be held from 3.30pm-6.30pm on Saturday, 12 July .
It will feature Latin dancing and will raise funds for MND Australia, the national peak body supporting Australians living with Motor Neurone Disease.
Entry is $15, with all proceeds donated to the cause.
