On Saturday night I was extremely proud and grateful to once again be chosen by the people of Logan and upper Gold Coast to be their representative in Federal Parliament for the next three years.
In the process, I also became the first MP to hold the seat of Forde for five consecutive terms.
It was a hard-fought campaign with some very strong challenges from my political opponents, who pushed me all the way right across the region.
So, while I have been returned to office, my margin has been reduced and in the process, the Liberal National Government lost power, returning myself and my colleagues to the Opposition benches.
I believe our country faces a challenging time in the years ahead as we recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, and deal with issues such as rising inflation and the cost of living, and slow wage growth.
There are also other factors beyond our control which will impact Australians, such as war in Europe, rising commodity prices, supply chain issues and regional tensions.
I want to ensure you, that my door remains open and my staff will continue to assist you in any way they can to resolve your issues and problems.
As always, I remain committed to this community, the place where I grew up and now have the opportunity to once again serve for the next three years.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who played a part in my re-election.
To the people of Forde who voted for me, and to all my supporters, colleagues, friends, volunteers and staff, I am eternally grateful.
Lastly, none of this would have been possible without the love and support of my wife Judi, my sons, and all my family.
Thank-you all. Bert.
