Sweet dreams, Logan: city sleeps its way into international top 10

Logan has made an international top 10 without getting out of bed, with its darker nights helping it outshine Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne as a place to settle down for some shut-eye.

An iSelect study ranked Logan tenth among 30 selected cities across Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom for sleep-friendly environmental conditions.

“Logan performed particularly well in low light pollution and hours of darkness,” an iSelect spokesperson said.

“It recorded one of the lowest average light pollution levels among the cities included in the study, along with an average of 11.9 hours of darkness per night.”

Logan’s light-pollution reading was less than a quarter of Brisbane’s, giving the city an advantage when the sun goes down.

It scored 56.40 out of 100, finishing sixth among the 10 Australian cities assessed.

Newcastle, Wollongong, Canberra, Adelaide and the Gold Coast occupied the overall top five.

For Yarrabilba resident Darcy Dobs, setting the scene for sleep means adding a little breeze and a rainy soundtrack.

“I do have the fan on year-round,” Ms Dobs said.

“I also have a speaker in my room, hook Spotify up to it and play rain music. I have to listen to that, otherwise I can’t sleep at all.”

Work, study and neighbourhood noise can still interrupt her rest, but cooler nights help.

“I do get a better sleep in winter because you can control your body temperature much easier,” she said.

Finding a routine that suits the individual is also a theme in advice from Sleep Health Foundation chief health officer Dr Moira Junge.

“Better sleep doesn’t have to mean striving for perfection and cutting out everything you enjoy,” she wrote in an article for Jean Hailes.

The iSelect study was conducted in June 2025 and published the following month.

It assessed temperature, darkness, light pollution and Google searches related to noise complaints, rather than measuring residents’ actual sleep.

Logan was the warmest Australian city studied, but its darkness and low artificial light helped secure its position.

“Our findings suggest Logan benefits from environmental conditions that may better support a good night’s rest, particularly its relatively low light pollution and average 11.9 hours of darkness,” the spokesperson said.
