Storm season nears, time to be on guard

As Logan enters the heart of storm season, the State Emergency Service (SES) is urging residents to take proactive steps in preparing for severe weather.

With heavy rainfall already impacting south-east Queensland and more wet weather expected, the SES and local police are bracing for an active season.

So far this storm season, which began on 1 October, the SES has responded to nearly 1000 requests for help statewide.

These requests have mostly come from the Brisbane region, primarily regarding structural damage.

The SES highlighted the importance of preparation for all households in a statement released last Thursday.

“It’s everyone’s responsibility to prepare themselves, their family, and their home for the next emergency,” the statement read.

“Taking steps to prepare for severe weather can make you and your family more resilient.”

The SES recommends several key steps to reduce the impact of severe weather, starting with an emergency plan.

Residents are encouraged to research local hazards and disaster management arrangements and discuss potential scenarios with their families.

The plan should include evacuation options and steps to take if you need to leave your home.

The SES stresses the importance of packing an emergency kit.

“Your kit should have supplies for several days, including food, water, medical and personal items, and important documents,” the SES said.

“Keep your kit in a waterproof container in an easily accessible location and check it every season to ensure supplies are fresh and safe to use.”

In preparation for storms, the SES advises homeowners to clear gutters, trim trees, and secure loose items that could become dangerous during high winds.

It’s also vital to identify the safest room in your home for shelter and know how to turn off the main supply of water, power, and gas.

For areas at risk of flooding, the SES recommends storing fuels, chemicals, and poisons above flood levels and using barriers or sandbags to prevent water from entering the home.

If anyone in the household relies on electrical equipment for medical reasons, having a backup plan in case of power outages is essential.

SES volunteers remain on the frontlines during storm season, but residents are urged to do their part in reducing the potential impacts of severe weather.
