Social housing – Logan Reserve home sweet home

A newly built unit complex in Logan Reserve is providing more than fifteen social homes for the area.

The new complex on Maranoa Street offers 15 two-bedroom units across seven buildings, currently housing 22 locals.

Residents Doris and Robert Melbourne moved in after around six months on the social housing register.

“We were very lucky,” Mrs Melbourne said.

She said her declining health was the reason she skipped the queue.

“Both Robert and I are very ill – we can’t walk so we get help at home,” she said.

Mrs Melbourne was her husband’s carer ever since he broke his back 20 years ago, but with her own health declining said it was a relief to be accepted into affordable housing.

“It is really wonderful to be here – those who live in this complex are so lucky.”

Mrs Melbourne’s neighbours Jansje Slick and Sue Dooley agreed they were lucky, and said the community was terrific.

All three women have become friends.

Ms Slick said she was on the social housing register since 2017, and Ms Dooley since 2016.

Both said it was a relief to finally move in.

“I love it here,” Ms Slick said.

Ms Dooley moved into the complex two months ago.

“The people here are so good – they’re so down to earth,” she said.

The average unit size is 63sqm, there are 15 covered carports and another 19 open carports for both residents and visitors.

The complex was developed by Gorman Property Group, built by Torsion homes and designed by ANG Building and Design.

It is being managed by community housing provider Community Housing Queensland Limited (CHQL).

Mrs Melbourne said the managers were “marvellous”.

The project received a $5.86 million from the state government, as part of its $5 billion investment towards social and affordable housing across Queensland.

The government has purchased 526 homes since July 2022 to help house individuals and families on the state’s social housing register.

Member for Waterford Shannon Fentiman said there were more than 5400 public homes in the region.

“These additional 15 properties will assist in providing further relief for Logan families,” Ms Fentiman said.

“These homes not only provide a roof over the heads of more Logan families but ensures they can easily access essential services, including healthcare facilities, educational institutions, public transport as well as nearby parks, recreational facilities, and shopping districts.”

CHQL state manager Alicia Follent said she hoped the new tenants enjoyed their new homes “for many years to come”.

“The acquisition of the Maranoa Street Apartments marks a strategic collaboration between Community Housing Ltd and the Queensland Department of Housing, accelerating the delivery of urgently needed social homes in a priority location,” she said.

“Working with our valued development partners, we are able to address the immediate housing needs in our communities, ensuring individuals and families have access to quality and secure homes.”
