For many, sewing is a hobby enjoyed quietly at home. But, at Beenleigh, one community event is transforming it into something much bigger: a chance to connect, create and make new friends.
Sew Social, hosted by The Sewing Lair at Beenleigh, brings people of all experience levels for an evening of conversation, creativity and collaboration.
On Friday 18 September, attendees can bring along their own sewing projects or use the venue equipment while enjoying a welcoming, supportive environment.
The Sewing Lair teacher Hayley Shaw said Sew Social brought people together for a chat and some quality time.
“It’s designed to be a social group where people can bring in their own current projects, whatever they might be, and use our communal space to motivate each other and get creative,” Ms Shaw said.
While everyone arrives with a different project or skill level, the evening is less about what people are making and more about the conversations, encouragement and friendships that develop, she says.
“We love promoting it as something that we do as a community, because it is a skill that you learn from others. As much as you can pick things up off the internet now and teach yourself,” Ms Shaw said.
“There’s nothing quite like being in a room with like minded people who can then sit together and see what you’re doing and bounce ideas back and forth,” she said.
Whether someone is sewing for the first time or has been sewing for decades, Sew Social encourages participants to share ideas, ask questions and learn from each other in a relaxed setting.
“We have sewing machines that are available for use if people can’t bring their own,” Ms Shaw said.
During a time when the world is moving fast, handmade crafts such as sewing offer participants the opportunity to slow down, learn practical skills and create something meaningful.
“People of all skill levels and any background are welcome to join us,” Ms Shaw said.
“We have people who have never used a sewing machine before, who walk in, and by the end of the session, they have made themselves a pencil case.”
For beginners, the event offers a welcoming environment to learn without the pressure, with experienced sewers there to provide guidance and encouragement.
“We’re just there to have a good time with like minded people and share our love of crafting.”
“We are a safe space for everyone … we just want to be there, meet new people and make cool stuff together,” Ms Shaw said.
As people begin to look for opportunities to connect beyond social media, Sew Social is showing that community can be built one stitch at a time.
