Saving lives one blood bag at a time

People who donate blood at Springwood during National Blood Donor Week this June will be patched up with a playful bright orange bandage.

The special bandage was designed by Australian artist David Booth, inspired by drawings from the kids of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide.

Springwood Blood Donation Centre manager Bea Connelley said the centre was busy preparing for Blood Donor Week, which runs from 8-19 June.

“Our donors are at the heart of everything we do at the Springwood Donor Centre,” Ms Connelley said.

“National Blood Donor Week is about recognising that generosity and reminding the community that it’s their donations that help ensure life-saving blood is there whenever it’s needed,” she said.

Donors during the week can expect extra big thanks, along with the knowledge they are  helping to save lives.

The Springwood centre collects around 20,000 blood, plasma and platelet donations each year, but needs more.

In just a week, 33,000 blood and plasma donations are needed across Australia to meet demand, and one blood donation can save up to three lives.

Lifeblood, the national blood donation and manufacturing service for Australia, is particularly seeking more donations from people with A and O blood types, with supplies currently low.

National Blood Donor Week is celebrated annually to recognise blood donors nationwide and raise awareness for blood donations.

Check your ability to donate and find your nearest blood donation centre on the Lifeblood website.

Book an appointment to donate by calling 13 14 95, or use the Lifeblood Donate Blood app.
