Rental cost rise results in business closure

As the current Chamber president, it gives me such pleasure to see our Logan businesses connecting with each other, creating more business, employment opportunities, and economic growth.

Part of our Chamber mission is to provide advocacy for business across all levels of government and bringing your concerns directly to our elected officials.

I thank our Logan representatives for providing the time to listen to what our members have had to say.

It has not been an easy time for many businesses in the past few years, and most recently, I have seen at least four businesses announce their closure. Not on-selling their business, just closing.

Is this rental cost issue, a lack of trade, or just mental weariness after a difficult few years and not much relief in sight?

This is one of the reasons why we need to make contact with the Small Business Commission to tap into the range of free or low-cost business assistance programs they provide.

The Logan Chamber of Commerce has had a great start to the year with two Butter Factory Breakfast Markets completed. It is reassuring to see more community coming out to support these small and micro businesses, as without your interest and attendance, these markets could not continue.

We welcomed Brian Kerle as our February guest speaker and enjoyed a delicious Springwood Lions breakfast. Brian told us all about his Basketball Academy, helping disadvantaged youth to engage in sport and taking it out to regional Queensland. This breakfast was sponsored by BNI Southside. At the beginning of March, we held our next members event at Club Hotel, Waterford, who put on a fabulous spread of your hot breakfast favourites, pastries, fruit, and granola bowls. Our guest presenters and sponsors, Trade and Investment Queensland.

Coming up, our next event is 27 March, with a topic of Outdoor Recreation and Leisure in Logan. This is at the Greenbank RSL.

In May, we look forward to meeting with the Small Business Commission Director and kickstarting Small Business Month at Fitzy’s Loganholme.
