Rankin – Neil Cotter – Greens

With record housing costs and inflation, plus a pending interest rate rise, cost of living is the most pressing issue facing most people at this election.

To make housing, most people’s single largest expense, more affordable the Greens will invest in a massive program of building houses incorporating a shared equity ownership scheme. The best way to solve a housing crisis is with houses.

We will also cap rents, and provide more rights for renters.

We have a lot of other plans for government that can and should make living more affordable. We can make dental and mental free under Medicare, public education actually free from school to TAFE and university, wipe out student debt, free childcare, increase the minimum wage, and raise income support payments to $88/day.

We should expect a lot more from our government. Too much government expenditure goes to those who in fact pay little or no tax, the wealthy and corporations. If we reverse that and instead tax those with most of the money government can do a lot more to help ordinary people.

The other issue that is paramount for this election is climate change. As we lurch from record fires to floods it is clear that it is an unfolding disaster that is already impacting our lives, yet the LNP or ALP aren’t willing to confront their fossil fuel donors and take real action.

The Greens of course have a lot of plans for real action on the climate crisis, including phasing out coal and gas, facilitate moving to electric vehicles, restore our land, invest in more public transport, create a publicly owned non-profit power retailer, and of course finally move to renewable electricity. Some of these also help with cost of living.

Demand our government work for us, vote Greens.
