I read with interest the continuing saga of the Bethania to Logan Village Rail Trail, and I am amazed that government representatives are still continuing to engage with the small minority of residents that believe they will be adversely affected.
The existing rail corridor, that is state owned property, was in place long before the Palm Lakes resort development. Residents have chosen to purchase their property there in the full knowledge that this was public land and could potentially be put back into use. The Rail Trail is a state and local government project that will allow safe community use of a decommissioned railway track.Â
To address some resident concerns about security and access, I have the following suggestions.
1) Secure fencing (similar to what borders roads for sound proofing) allowing for privacy and security for the residents. These can be painted by local artists with decorative murals, perhaps telling the story of the railway line. Additional trees can be planted (perhaps native edible plants) for extra shade and protection.
2) Access between the two resorts – add some security doors (pin coded) for resident only access so that they can continue to short cut between the two areas. By upgrading the existing corridor, this will actually provide a better path access for residents with mobility issues
3) The rail trail will provide a safe path directly to the railway station for residents by utilising the secured gates. This means that scooters and walkers have only ONE road to cross and it will also give better access for walker / scooters for the pool and community center (for those that do not drive)
Diverting the existing corridor around the residents suggested route will involve land resumption from existing businesses, Canterbury College and the front of Palm Lakes resort as well. It will impact entry to the High Street side of Palm Lakes as cars would have to give way to users of the trail.Â
So while this loud minority of residents don’t want to give up their free caravan parking, garden space, or short cuts, perhaps they can think of the wider community benefits such as a maintained walking trail for locals and visitors. Let the rail trail tell the story of local industry and development in Logan.Â
