Pressure 3×3 wins Logan Showdown at Hyperdome

Half a court. One hoop. Three players a side. A 12-second shot clock.

Pressure 3×3 thrived in basketball’s fast lane, defeating Playgrnd Crew 21–16 to seize the men’s crown at Logan’s PLAYGRND Showdown.

The competition transformed the Hyperdome car park behind Event Cinemas into an outdoor arena for 3×3 — basketball stripped down to its fastest essentials.

Organisers said about 90% of competitors travelled from outside Logan, drawing athletes, families and spectators from across Queensland and beyond.

PLAYGRND Showdown ambassador Deola D’brown said regional reach demonstrated Logan’s potential as a sporting destination.

“What excites us most is seeing Logan become a destination for athletes chasing real opportunities,” Mr D’brown said.

“The PLAYGRND Showdown isn’t just about competition, it’s about creating pathways.

“Athletes can start on an outdoor court, earn FIBA 3×3 ranking points, and work towards state, national and even international representation.

“Seeing so many visitors travel to Logan for the event shows the appetite for inclusive, high-quality sporting experiences and we’re proud to be building those opportunities right here in the community.”

Unlike the familiar five-a-side game, matches last no more than 10 minutes and can finish sooner if one team reaches 21 points.

Pressure hit that target in the final, completing a five-game campaign in which it won four matches and scored 67 points.

The team opened with a 15–6 victory over Olympians before suffering its only defeat — a razor-thin 17–16 overtime loss to Bandits.

Pressure responded by beating Playgrnd Crew 13–6, progressed through the semi-final and then overcame the same opponent again with the championship at stake.

Daniel Mitchell, Robert McCowan, Tayte Thornton and Thomas Denny formed the winning squad.

The wheelchair competition and skills camp delivered another memorable outcome.

Twelve people participated in the camp, while young spectator Phoenix left inspired to play, with his mother later using a voucher to buy him his first basketball.

His mother, Bec Kassing, said watching his response had made her week.

“Thank you again. Seeing the joy on his face made my entire week,” she wrote on Facebook.

“We used the voucher to buy Phoenix his first basketball and he was stoked!”

On the court, Wheel Contenders defeated Barber Shop 7–3 in their opening encounter before returning for the final and winning 11–6.

Lachlan Steinohrt, Jake Fulwood and Kim Spark represented the victorious Wheel Contenders team.

Presented by MADE Concepts, the Logan competition was an official FIBA 3×3 Quest stop and offered a pathway beyond the local event.

Organisers advertised an all-expenses-paid trip to the Brisbane finals for the open winner, with the Brisbane event providing a route towards the international FIBA 3×3 World Tour.

Ahead of the showdown, MADE Concepts director Ciara Tuttle said bringing the competition to Hyperdome would create a visible local entry point into higher-level basketball.

“Bringing the PLAYGRND Showdown to Hyperdome helps create a highly visible, community-centred pathway event in the heart of Logan,” Ms Tuttle said.

MADE Concepts said participants had praised the atmosphere, entertainment and prize giveaways, while spectators had expressed interest in following the remainder of the PLAYGRND tour.

The event was supported by Logan City Council and the Queensland Government.

Promotions also advertised women’s, junior and all-inclusive divisions.

The rapid-fire 3×3 format has been an Olympic sport since the Tokyo Games.
