Possible “severe thunderstorms” on Logan’s horizon

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned of possible severe thunderstorms headed for Logan in the coming weeks.

“… this is typical at this time of year,” a BOM spokesperson said.

“And we encourage people to always remain up to date with the latest bureau forecasts and warnings on the website and the bureau app.”

He said Logan residents would continue to see showers in the short term, with a slight chance of a storm, but should not expect “any severe thunderstorm activity in the next few days”.

The spokesperson said BOM was assessing the Christmas Day wind gusts and “the damage in their wake”, with the strongest recorded winds reaching 106km/h just after 9pm.

“However, there was evidence of stronger winds,” he said.

He said that “while a tornado cannot be ruled out completely”, BOM was working with other agencies to gather additional evidence.

“… including images of damage to other areas and building a thorough assessment of all available data, in order to form a complete determination of the event,” he said.

“High resolution satellite imagery of vegetation damage between Cedar Vale and Coomera show a three- to four-kilometre-wide passage of damage.”

The images showed damage to windward western facing slopes, while eastern facing slopes and valleys were mostly untouched.
