Police blitz targets drug use

Days before launching a statewide blitz on drug driving, Logan police have issued 52 infringement notices during a two-day traffic operation aimed at unsafe driving behaviour.

Twelve of them were notices for drink driving, and six people returned a positive drug result.

Five people have been killed on Logan roads in 2021 – five more than the same time last year.

Sergeant Jason Robertson said a large percentage of serious crashes in the Logan area are a result of impaired drivers.

“Regardless of what motor vehicle you’re driving, it’s important for people to remember that they are in control of an object that can end lives in an instant.

“It is our role to help keep the community safe, but ultimately people need to take accountability every time they step into a vehicle.”

The drug driving blitz would be until June 30 and would focus on high visibility random drug testing aimed at deterring drug driving offences and preventing serious and fatal crashes that occur as a result.

Acting Inspector Paul Algie said drugs were the cause of almost 10% of road fatalities nation-wide, with the impairment significantly increasing the likelihood of a crash.

“If you are driving with drugs in your system you are 10 times more likely to be responsible for a crash,” Acting Inspector Algie said.

“We know all too well that these crashes have very serious consequences that can directly impact your life, and those around you.”

The two-day Logan operation was on February 19-20.
