People flock to barren alley for Extraction

There’s a lot to be said for word-of-mouth.

That’s what’s pulling dozens of people to a back alley in Slacks Creek.

Look for the Mr Toys Toyworld sign  on the Pacific Highway and take the next driveway, to the end where there’s a car park and not really much else. The most colourful part of the area is some yellow paint, and this is where one of the trendiest, most upmarket coffee shops in town is doing a roaring trade.

Extraction Coffee has become an iconic addition to a list of well-known Logan brands.

Its cafe serves breakfast and brunch, stretching into lunch. Like its coffee, it’s a well thought-out menu.

The healthy take on traditional smashed avo is creative, topped with pickles to offer the bite usually provided by lemon juice, whipped ricotta, and the unusual addition of asparagus and Baba Ghanoush. They both work, although the lemon myrtle bread was a little crumbly for this reviewer’s taste.

Local produce is in heavy supply, none more evident than the Beenleigh Butchery bacon on the brekkie sandwich. House-made barbecue sauce is a flavoursome touch.

Anyone brave enough to start the day with “almond chocolate pancakes, toasted marshmallow, chocolate ice-cream and caramel sauce”, it’s there for the taking.

Those ingredients were taken right from the menu, and it’s as indulgent as it sounds.

There’s a Servian souffle for something a bit different to eggs benedict. And for those looking for something strictly for lunch, the chicken parmy sub comes with waffle fries.

Sure, the coffee here is superb. But the smoothies built with goodness are an amazing option, particularly on a hot Summer’s day.
