YOU may have heard about a little game played over the weekend that saw the North Logan Lions take home the AFL Premiership.
Yes, ok, some people know them as the Brisbane Lions too.
I’ve been a member for over 20 years so I couldn’t miss the chance to see them win and flew down to Melbourne for the match.
And what an epic show it was.
The Lions’ 120-60 mauling of the Swans was a very sweet victory, and it made me reflect on the ways the Lions are similar to Logan.
Both the team and our city are young and full of energy, with loads of potential.
But to win the Grand Final, the Lions couldn’t just cruise through, they had to play their very best.
The same can be said about changing Logan’s reputation.
It won’t happen without all of us playing a role and doing our best to turn Logan’s potential into reality.
Part of that means delivering great facilities for you.
Everleigh Oval, an AFL and Auskick field in Greenbank, is the new home of the Greenbank Giants and the Park Ridge Pirates.
It was built by Mirvac to be an exact replica of the MCG in size, orientation and drainage.
Mirvac has also gone above and beyond delivering this, along with an amazing $6 million clubhouse and café funded mostly by council – with help from AFL Queensland and the state government – for our community to enjoy.
The $16 million new AFL hub is the first of our next generation sports infrastructure to be delivered. Next to be ready is the Beenleigh Aquatic Centre upgrade, followed by the $140 million Logan Indoor Sports Centre to begin construction in 2026.
Young people in our city will have some of the best sports infrastructure in SEQ well before the Olympics arrives.
Sport is important because it’s where children learn resilience, team work, listening and communication.
With 80% of Logan kids playing sport – it’s a priceless investment in their future.
