Opinion: Mayor’s message direct from Logan airport

Logan! I’m writing to you from the Logan International Airport.

No, it’s not a new airport in our amazing city – although, that might be a pitch for another
day.

I’m at Boston Logan International Airport in the USA, where I’ve just arrived to meet with 46 other mayors from 17 countries for the final part of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative.

The initiative is a training program by the Bloomberg Centre for Cities at Harvard University, equipping mayors and senior council officials to tackle complex challenges in their cities and improve the quality of life of their residents.

I started this program, which is now in its ninth year, last July with a trip to New York.

I learned from some of the world’s best leaders and minds and brought back great ideas to
Logan.

We’re currently working on some new ways to improve Logan’s reputation and the quality of life for residents, starting with some projects in Woodridge.

Many of these ideas came straight from the community and they are focused on safety, night time activation, the Global Food Markets and finding a way to encourage more business and employment opportunities around the uplift of the train station.

Now I am in Boston and will be bringing some of these innovative ideas we’ve brainstormed
in Logan for a bit more work with Harvard professors, before I tell you more about them
when I’m back.

Other mayors will be doing the same.

Through this collaborative approach, we can all uplift our cities and make the world a better
place.

Like the original trip to New York, this trip to Boston is for work, supported by Bloomberg
Philanthropies, and at zero cost to ratepayers.

Of course, I’ll make sure to see another Major League Baseball Game, because our Olympic
baseball diamond plans are progressing too.
