OPINION | Call for no silence on sexual violence

By Member for Waterford Shannon Fentiman

It seems like every time we turn on the news or scroll through social media, there’s another heartbreaking story of violence against women.

Despite all the progress we’ve made, it’s a sobering reminder of just how much work there is still to do.

I reflected on this when I recently joined the Centre Against Sexual Violence for its candlelight vigil in Logan, marking the beginning of Sexual Violence Awareness Month during October.

We are incredibly fortunate in Logan to have organisations like the Centre Against Sexual Violence and Murrigunyah, whose dedicated workers provide vital support to women and families every day.

Murrigunyah has a particularly special history, having been established here in Logan by Aboriginal women Elders who recognised the need for culturally appropriate sexual assault support.

Their legacy continues through the important work being done today.

One of the most moving moments of the evening was hearing from Jane, a victim-survivor who shared a powerful poem about her experiences.

Her courage in speaking out was extraordinary, and I know her story will help others find their own voices.

Despite the sadness and frustration, we all felt that evening, there was also a real sense of hope.

Hope in the courage of people like Jane, in the dedication of frontline workers who support those affected by violence, and in our strong Logan community, coming together and refusing to accept that this is simply the way things have to be.

I want our daughters, nieces and granddaughters to grow up in a world where they don’t have to think twice about walking to their car alone, holding their keys between their fingers when they go for a run, or learning a long list of precautions just to feel safe in public.

This month is a reminder of why we must keep talking about sexual violence, even when those conversations are difficult.

Because silence allows harmful attitudes to go unchallenged.
