New social builds yet to meet long housing queue

Only one social home is being built in Logan for every 10 applicants currently in the queue, according to the latest figures.

More than 300 social and affordable homes are either under construction or under contract in Logan right now in, while thousands of people and families are waiting to live there.

As of December 2024, there were around 3000 applications on the social housing register with a Logan suburb listed as one of the preferences.

The number of applicants with a local preference has remained at 2500 or more since mid-2022, with single adults making up the majority every year.

There are currently 315 homes under construction or under contract in the city, and almost 5000 across the state – a 6% boost to the total social and affordable housing supply.

“These social and affordable homes are just one part of the government’s ambitious goal to deliver one million homes by 2044, including 53,500 new social homes,” Queensland’s housing minister Sam O’Connor said.

“From November to the end of February, the Crisafulli Government has accelerated the delivery of 5000 social and affordable homes either in contract or under construction across Queensland.

“This is just the start of our housing delivery. We’re rebuilding our housing system from the ground up and backing our builders to get more homes for Queenslanders faster.”
