Young people sleeping on couches, moving between crisis accommodation or carrying their belongings from place to place will be offered a new source of supported housing in Logan from September.
Anglicare Southern Queensland’s $14 million Youth Homelessness Accommodation Service will support people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or at significant risk of losing stable accommodation.
The service will include 24 studio units for individuals and six one-bedroom units for couples or young families, alongside support intended to help residents reconnect with education, employment and longer-term housing.
Anglicare chief executive Sue Cooke said many young people arriving at homelessness services had been living out of backpacks and suitcases.
“We want to give them a space where they can finally unpack, take a breath and feel that, for once, they do not have to keep moving,” Ms Cooke said.
“For young people without a stable home, the impacts can be immediate and far-reaching, from couch surfing and crisis accommodation to disengaging from school, training or employment.”
Anglicare said the service would open as young people across the South Brisbane–Logan corridor faced rising rents and a shortage of immediate accommodation.
The organisation cited data showing Logan’s median rent had increased from $350 in 2020 to $600, placing further pressure on people already struggling with living costs.
Its 2026 Rental Affordability Snapshot assessed 741 listings across Logan and Beaudesert but found only two suitable properties for households relying on income support.
Ms Cooke said stable housing, combined with appropriate support, could help young people remain connected to education and work while moving towards independence.
Anglicare is now seeking donations from Logan businesses, community groups and residents to help furnish the accommodation before it opens.
Each studio is expected to require about $2300 in basic furniture and household items, including a bed, sofa, dining table and storage.
“A room is only the beginning,” Ms Cooke said.
