Million dollar community funding milestone

In the last 13 years, Inala’s Blue Fin Fishing Club has donated $2.85 million dollars to the local community.

The Blue Fin Fishing Club first opened it’s doors nearly 70 years ago in January of 1956 and has always operated as a not for profit organisation, General Manager Peter Purins said.

“The only two things we do with the money earned by the club is to make the facilities better for members of the club or to donate the funds to the community,” Mr Purins said.

“In our case, we chose to look after organisations and look after the community.”

Money spent at the club is redistributed back into the community, after covering the cost of running the club.

“Every Tuesday night, we have about 16 or 17 different organisations and local community groups that we support,” Mr Purins said.

“Every main meal that we serve on the Tuesday night, $5 of that will go towards a local community organisation and that raises a considerable amount of funds.”

This month community organisations Brisbane South First Aid Volunteers, Wandarrah Preschool & Community Centre, Lions Club of Inala and Paws for Hope & Understanding will receive the funding from Tuesday meal sales.

Blue Fin Fishing Club also provides regular funding for programs like the school breakfast program, where the club provides funding for 9 local schools to feed their students and staff breakfast every morning before school.

“We currently support nine, looking towards 10 local schools where we give them funds to organise a breakfast program for the children that attend their schools,” Mr Purins said.

“We also give quite a considerable donation to the Salvation Army, where we give them around 60 hams every Christmas, and that’s to go to families that may not be able to even buy a ham.

“It’s up to these organisations to distribute these resources as they see fit which makes a difference to someone’s life and that’s what we’re all about.”

For their 70th birthday in January 2026, the club will hold several celebratory events, including dinners and week long promotions.

“There’s going to be a big dinner, which is being held on Saturday, 24 January,” Mr Purins said.

“We will probably have 200 people attend, and we’ll also celebrate our long held members, people who have been members for 45, 50, 55 and 60 years.

“That day in itself will be massive, but we will have all different promotions throughout that week as well.”
