About 30 volunteers are helping vulnerable Logan residents with everyday tasks through a community program aimed at reducing isolation and easing pressure on struggling households.
The volunteers are part of Neighbour in Need, a program run by Logan Connect, an organisation that brings residents together on the first Sunday of each month to assist people in their community with practical support.
Armed with gardening gloves, cleaning supplies and tools, volunteers help with jobs such as mowing lawns, cleaning homes, cooking meals, visiting residents and even knitting items for those in need.
Neighbour in Need program manager Kerry Anderson said the initiative was about more than just completing chores.
“You think you’re just mowing a lawn. But then you see the joy on someone’s face, and you realise you’ve given them back a piece of their life,” one volunteer said.
The program has recently expanded after Logan Connect received funding through Carinity’s Collaborative Community Projects grant, allowing the group to support more households across the city.
“With new volunteers joining us, it’s been wonderful to be able to support a larger number of households,” Ms Anderson said.
One of the residents receiving support is Allison, a single full-time mother managing health challenges while caring for her children.
When volunteers first visited her home, housework and yard maintenance had piled up and daily expenses such as school supplies, packed lunches and petrol were often out of reach.
A team from Neighbour in Need helped clean her home and later returned to mow the lawn and restore the backyard.
“At times when I haven’t been able to meet the bills, it’s been invaluable. It’s really nice to know that people care,” Allison said.
Inspired by the help she received, Allison began supporting a neighbour who had fallen ill. In return, he helped repair her car and now regularly assists with property maintenance.
Organisers say the exchange reflects the program’s broader goal: building a community where neighbours look out for one another.
