More than 50 singers will take the stage in Bethania next month to perform a repertoire of familiar classic songs, including Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond and Que Sera Sera by Doris Day.
But this choir is unlike most others in the region.
The Logan Dementia Alliance Choir is made up of people living with dementia, alongside their family members, carers and volunteers.
Choir co-ordinator Norma Hambling said the choir had 48 regular attendees but that over 100 people had registered to participate in the choir.
“We’ve impacted the lives of over 100 people through choir in some way since we started, which I think is pretty good,” Ms Hambling said.
“It’s an opportunity to make social connections. There’s an acceptance of everyone, each and every person.”
Weekly choir practice sessions, held at the Bethania Community Centre from 11.30am to 1.30pm on Wednesdays, are structured to reduce pressure associated with other choirs, like memorising songs, harmonies or the names of your peers.
“We have a published song book with song lyrics that is available to everyone in the choir,” Ms Hambling said.
“You also all wear name badges, so that you can easily see a person’s name so you don’t have to feel embarrassed because you can’t remember someone’s name.
“It’s a safe and welcoming place to be where you don’t have to explain to anyone anything about your diagnosis,” she said.
Ms Hambling said the environment allowed members to participate without fear of judgment.
The choir was founded by Logan resident Ross Wiseman after he was diagnosed with dementia.
“He thought this would be a really good way where he could put his energies into something really positive for people with dementia and their families in particular,” Ms Hambling said.
From 11.30am on Wednesday, 6 May, the choir will perform eight songs at Bethania’s Community Centre, before being joined onstage by 16 members of another dementia choir based on the Gold Coast for a further four songs.
“We’ll have refreshments and a light lunch after the performance,” Ms Hambling said.
“I think it’s important to celebrate as many milestones as you can.
It’s a recognition of what you’ve been able to achieve over the last three years.”
To reserve a seat to watch the performance, text 0457 386 789 or email logandementiaalliance@gmail.com.
Tickets can also be purchased at the door for a $10 donation to the choir.
