At the end of last year, as I do every year, I adopted a Kids4Kids Foundation School Supply Charity Box, which until last week was accepting contributions in my Electorate Office from the public.
I am pleased to report that the response from the community was tremendous, with a significant number of contributions made to assist Queensland school children.
Thank you to everyone who donated this year.
Kids4Kids provides school supplies to families in need and accept any new or good condition school stationery supplies including unused exercise books and Queensland year books for primary or school aged children.
The Kids4Kids Foundation charity was started in 2017, through 9-year-old Samuel Glancy.
Samuel met two other young boys who had escaped domestic violence and were left with nothing.
Wanting to help these boys and other children in need, Samuel started collecting school supplies, for families who could not afford the basics and were forced to go without.
Initially, supplying two schools with around 4,000 items for students each year, the Foundation has grown astronomically since its inception and now supplies 13 different schools with over 100,000 supplies.
Following the collection of my Donation Box last week, I joined Kids4Kids and volunteers from across our community – including local Logan Councillors – in assisting with the sorting, and packing of, the supplies donated.
Over 1,000 Back to School Packs were assembled during their ‘Packing Day’, which include backpacks filled with everything young students should need for the year, from stationery supplies to drink bottles, and even school shoes.
Through being involved with the work of Kids4Kids over the past few years, I have seen firsthand that the supplies really do make a difference for students.
Parents who are going through difficult points in their life, whether they are dealing with illness or strains on their budget – particularly during the current cost-of-living crisis – would otherwise feel like their child cannot attend school without necessary supplies.
The students who receive these supplies, also feel like they now truly belong in their school.
