Is the devil in the detail?

It was great to read the list of nine things that council wants to put on its shopping list over the next three years.

I want to acknowledge that without MyCity Logan, the list might have been hidden from public view, like a lot of other things that council does.

There are a lot of instances lately where council spin is being sent around the internet unedited or unchecked which isn’t great for us.

Sure, I know information is published somewhere, but who is going to look that deeply to find it. Most people would be unaware of what their rates are being used for.

I would like to ask a question about each of the items in the “wish list” as you have called it.

The Southern Gateway Motorway is a much-needed project, but can you please tell us what route you’d like for it to take?

Similarly, the Salisbury to Beaudesert passenger rail is a worthwhile project, but with the community worried about the impact of inland rail – as is the mayor and council – then it would be prudent to let people know the exact route where council thinks it should be built, and how.

Speaking of inland rail, the mayor has written to the state and federal governments. Why would it be necessary to have this in a three-year advocacy plan when it is obvious council has little say in what happens?

The same goes for Logan Central Youth Centre. The state government has announced money for this project, so why would it be included in a plan for three years into the future? Maybe council is using the old trick: To make yourself look good, always include a couple of things that you know you’ll win.

There are two major park projects in the Park Ridge area, which is okay, but that’s exactly what the rest of Logan is worried about: That council will focus on the growth areas of the city and ignore the established parts.

Remember, Mr Mayor, the rest of us pay rates too.

And where in the advocacy plan is something that helps protect the environment? Council is good to mitigate impacts of inland rail. Why not mitigate impacts of the Coomera Bypass?

I think the plan is a good thing, I just wonder how much devil is in the detail.
