Economic Development Queensland has released land the state government says could unlock more than 170 new social homes in Logan.
Meanwhile, the government has approved plans to build another 16 social housing units at Beenleigh.
About 3.5 hectares of development-ready land has been released in Meadowbrook, which could house up to 172 homes.
In October last year, the federal government promised $40 million of infrastructure to fast-track the approval to build 500 homes at the same site on University Drive, next to Griffith University.
The funding will cover infrastructure like water, sewerage, power and other necessary shared services.
Last month, EDQ lodged its first development application relating to the site with Logan City Council, seeking approval to start bulk earthworks and vegetation clearing.
These proposed preliminary works will mark the first phase of construction for the project and will prepare the site for residential development, according to EDQ.
Over at Juniper Court in Beenleigh, 16 social homes to be reserved for young victims of domestic violence and those at risk of homelessness has been approved for construction.
“These new housing developments are in locations close to public transport and other essential services and amenities,” Queensland’s deputy premier and infrastructure minister Jarrod Bleijie said.
“This is just the start. We are working on other initiatives to unlock more supply and get more Queenslanders into homes sooner.”
Only a few minutes down the road from Juniper Court, at a block on Manila Street, construction has started on another social housing facility for local youth who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
This $14 million accommodation block will include 24 studio apartments and six one-bedroom apartments for couples or small families.
It will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a construction end-date set for mid-2026.
