Hooning petition presented to Queensland Parliament

Almost 2000 people have signed a petition calling for action on hooning at Yarrabilba.

The petition calls for three actions to reduce hooning at the intersection of Waterford Tamborine Road and Yarrabilba Drive.

The intersection is the only way in and out of the suburb for more than 15,000 residents.

Petitioners want physical lane separation approaching the intersection and traffic calming measures such as speed bumps or traffic islands.

The petition also calls for more resources for the Logan Village – Yarrabilba Police Station so police can patrol the area and catch people hooning.

The petition also asks for red-light and anti-hooning cameras with facial and number plate recognition at that intersection and throughout the suburb.

The petition closed on the Friday, 5 June. It was referred to Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg and tabled in Queensland Parliament on Tuesday, 23 June.

While the petition focuses on the Waterford Tamborine Road and Yarrabilba Drive intersection, this is just one hotspot of hooning activity in Yarrabilba.

Local councillor Nathan St Ledger said he has met with the Department of Transport and Main Roads about traffic calming measures in the area.

The single access road to Yarrabilba is also an issue many locals think needs fixing.

Cr St Ledger said he wanted the department to see what was actually happening on the ground at Yarrabilba.

Roads in Yarrabilba are built by Stockland according to Yarrabilba’s Priority Development Area meaning there is little opportunity for consultation.

Construction has begun on a new intersection further down Waterford Tamborine Road.

This would cross Jimbillunga Drive which will connect to Wentland Avenue.

The intersection is expected to be completed mid next year.
